Moisture Mapping 101

What is Moisture Mapping?

Moisture mapping is the process of identifying and locating areas of moisture intrusion in a building or structure. It is an important tool for identifying and resolving moisture problems, which can lead to a variety of health and structural issues.

Methods for Moisture Mapping

There are a variety of methods that can be used to perform moisture mapping, including:

  • Visual inspection: This involves looking for signs of moisture damage, such as stains, mold, or peeling paint.
  • Moisture meters: These devices measure the moisture content of materials, and can be used to identify areas of high moisture.
  • Infrared cameras: These cameras can detect differences in temperature, which can be used to identify areas of moisture intrusion.

How to Perform a Moisture Test on Walls

To perform a moisture test on walls, you will need a moisture meter. Follow these steps:

  1. Remove any furniture or other objects from the area to be tested.
  2. Set the moisture meter to the appropriate setting for the type of material you are testing.
  3. Hold the moisture meter against the wall surface and press the button to take a reading.
  4. Move the moisture meter around the wall surface, taking readings at regular intervals.
  5. Record the readings on a piece of paper or in a spreadsheet.

Once you have completed the moisture test, you can use the readings to identify areas of high moisture. These areas may require further investigation and repair to address the source of the moisture intrusion.
